What's wrong with the idea that every component in a music system should ideally have zero intrinsic colouration?

There's nothing inherently wrong with it. Just that not everyone is an objectivist and it's not the only valid approach.

Yes, I know it's impossible but if you can select one component that as-near-as-dammit meets this spec, then I would have thought this was a good thing.

If it's a good thing for you, then it is indeed a good thing. The only spec I'm interested in meeting is the most pleasurable experience while listening to music. And for me, the objective approach hasn't always given me that, and in those cases, I go with whatever it is that does.

And that's a good thing too.
