Why is it that skeptics are always busybodies? The fact that the market takes care of this stuff is not enough. They must inform the ignorant lest they be taken advantage of. And usually they follow up with a call for state intervention (The irony of advocating coercion to ‘correct’ purely voluntary transactions is obviously lost on these folks).Health foods/natural cures/homeopathic whatever WILL make some people feel better. If they did not, none would be on the market. How they do this is simply not testable because the end result is a subjective experience related by language. It is not independently verifiable. Different cables/plugs/amps WILL sound different to some people. The market shows us that by the number of successful companies that make and sell the stuff.
Ultimately any product is bought for subjective reasons – folks want to hear more pleasing sound or to ease their suffering or whatever. Science is locked outside the door at this point. Only the market can show how well these products satisfy the consumer and this has a tendency to piss off control freaks.
