Re: Goals

Good sound is the goal that everyone articulates. But with hifi hobbyists, the goal more often is just plain entertainment. They read Stereophile because they find it entertaining. They'll spend hours compairing magic bricks or cable wraps or metasonic infindubulators because they find it fun to do so.

I never really understood this until it was pointed out explicitly by Nelson Pass, a very smart and observant fellow. And just as kids get justifiably annoyed when you walk uninvited into their game and point out that those aren't real teacups and tea and that the doll is just a hunk of plastic and not a real cowboy, so do the tweaks when you dash some water into the big game of make-believe. (I deliberately exclude the guys who participate because they're selling that make-belive tea; their motivations are a lot more direct and their reactions that much more virulent)

I've largely stopped doing that and spend my hifi entertainment time looking at real engineering problems. But that's my choice and not for everyone. It just happens to entertain me.
