If you take data, encode it to take up less space in the transmission channel, and then decode it for delivery, then I would say compression is involved. Lossless or lossy, it's still compression.

In a link you provided (http://www.onhifi.com/features/20010615.htm) there is this:

when Johnston announced, "This is playing back at 320kbps"

Sounds to me like he's very proud of his particular compression strategy and codec.

If you're referring to the fact that the PSR delivers a "less compressed" experience than 2-channel by virtue of it's recreation of the whole sound field, then that's reasonable enough (but certainly open to debate).

Unfortunately, it's hard to tell what you mean, which is probably your intention. Chain jerking, in other words.
