I'm not saying any of these folks haven't done great work.

However......

While anyone who worked on encoding schemes such as MP3 is clearly doing important stuff, it's outside the category of making things that sound good, unless you are suggesting that MP3 is a step forward (over, say, Redbook CD). It's stuff that (at best) sounds less bad.

I did a search of Flanagan's work, but the bulk of it (if I have the right guy) was concerned with speech recognition and telephony-related stuff. Didn't see anything acoustics-related, so maybe I have the wrong person.

The people associated with testing (e.g. Soulodre) are also off the list for obvious reasons, even if they are doing great work.

I put Meares in the maybe category precisely because he worked at the BBC, even though I couldn't find anything specific that he has done.
