It's nice to have the internal 1TB SSD (as I do on my older 2018 Intel Mac). It makes backups much simpler. The 'easy button' would be to attach an external USB SSD and let Time Machine do its thing in the background.... hourly, daily, weekly.
There's no one right way. Whatever works best for you is what counts.
My 2020 model year Mac Mini M1 dedicated to music replaced my aging 2012 unit 8 years later. Even though my 'daily driver' 2018 model Intel Mac Mini that's on my desk is still going strong I am so tempted to buy a new Mac Mini M4. Who knows. I might later this year. I repurpose the old ones by giving them to family members.
