Thanks for the tips. I don't anticipate using much storage, but I guess the external SSD could also serve as the mini's backup. Getting the higher 1TB is merely for future proofing for the hand me down someday, now that Apple in$i$t$ you do it up front.
I have use of a keyboard, trackball (though I haven't USED one of those in more than a decade!) and a monitor to set it up. I really don't want to purchase any more junk if it's only necessary in "emergency" situations, I can always just move the mini to my wife's desk and borrow hers on the sly. Reasonably soon I'll inherit our old TV (a puny 40" Vizio) to watch my opera and concert DVD's on, so I'll have that option as well.
I guess I'd better get the ball rolling now, especially if the silly tariff bandwagon takes off. The MB Pro is in stock, the configured Mini takes at least a couple of weeks.
