With ASIO4ALL, the utility acts on the output device outside the media player's domain. (Although some media players will indicate ASIO4ALL.) The media player sees the same output device, but with ASIO4ALL acting upon that output device, the playback is cleaner because the output signal is no longer converted to 48 kHz by Windows. (Just be sure the ASIO4ALL conversion checkbox is un-checked.)
