In Reply to: Suggestions for a Sony SCD 777ES Upgrade? Too many options... posted by Fore on January 20, 2006 at 12:02:33:
At four years, give or take, and depending on how much playback time you've put on your player, you're nearing, if not in, the zone of likely spindle motor/sled motor/laser assembly replacement. At this point, if one of 'em starts to go south, you might want to consider replacing all three parts at once. If you're still under warranty, that, of course, can be done by an authorized Sony service center. But if you've kept up with the experiences of some here, that could be a chancy proposition. Even if the service work is done right, the player may not be shipped back to you in its original double box and packing material...so your 777's then at the mercy of in-transit handling.
If you've read my 777 reviews, you know that the modder I've used is also the tech who performs basic service work (I had all three parts replaced in 2004 after a little over four years of fairly heavy operation). I happen to have the happy circumstance of living not far from him, so shipment is not a problem for me, and he keeps my 777 healthy with a minimum of turnaround time. I'd suggest that, if you haven't already, you seek out not only a modder but also a competent tech who knows the product and can provide knowledgable and reliable service (including shipping your unit back to you in its designed packing) when--it's not likely a question of "if"--that time comes. In any event, you should budget for parts replacement even as you consider mods.
You don't list your system or listening environment, so I don't know how much, if any, latitude you have in playing with your listening room. If you have some and your concern is transparency and openness, e-mail me at jimtranr@web2mail.com, and I'll share some room treatment tips that have worked for me in wringing some extraordinary transparency out of my modded 777-based system.
Best of luck in whatever you decide.
Jim
