"Try tube dampers and try bypassing the pre all together."Excellent advice which was what I would suggest as well. As Al points out, tubes can be effected by outside acoustical interference and the tube dampers will reduce this quite a bit.
I remember when I had my GTA 300B tube amp up and running. One could talk loudly next to one of the 300B's when the system was idling and U could here it being reproduced thru the speakers!!!
Made me wonder just how much of that glorious 300B sound is being caused by microphonic feedback/distorion! The amp sounded MUCH better/cleaner when placed on an air isolation bladder.
