build our own amps. I could tell you vintage amps with good iron but many would need power supply and/or driver redesign. I simply don't know enough about current production amps for sane prices to feel comfortable giving advice. If you can afford them, look at Gordon Rankin's and Allen Wright's gear. Or ask when inquiring as to what make of transformers and the schematic. Take that info to tube DIY and solicit opinions. Some of the respected mid-priced gear like Manely and Cary make their own transformers and might not publish schematics making comparisions virtually impossible.

My advice, take your time and bother to learn circuit design. Most big companies tend to go with tried and true old hat stuff which is safe. But if you want the best possible sound you might be better off with a smaller designer using CCS/plate choke/transformer loaded stages and utilizing transformers with better cores. Price will not be cheap and results might not be heard unless the rest of the system is up to snuff. For me that means vinyl, high efficency speakers, and amps no more than 30 watts per channel.
