Moving speakers and inch or even less changes the balance between speakers at all frequencies, but only if they are close enough to being setup correctly to benefit from this (obviously if they are not anywhere near being placed well than it won't make a useful difference). When the speakers operate in a unified plane relative to the listening position the image is balanced, the bass is precise, and the system is quiter because of reduced adverse interactions between the speakers. With some really expensive models this can be down to fractions of inches to get right.
