According to David Weems' book "Designing Building and Testing Your Own Speeakers" enclosures that are narrow and deep provide the best imaging. On the other hand, wide, shallow speakers will provide the best bass. If you look at most vintage speakers, they were usually much wider than they were deep. On the other hand, most modern speakers, are much deeper than they are wide. The current trend has been to sacrafice a little bass to get better imaging.HG.
