Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Deeper bass = more room bass resonances exited = more bass booms = reduced quality image

All frequency response peaks (mainly from room reflections not the speakers themselves) affect the stereo image.

Bass peaks from standing waves (from in-phase room reflections) have more energy than mid-range and treble peaks so are most disruptive.

That's why small speakers with limited output under 50Hz. can have such a good image (they can't excite room bass resonances under 50Hz. because they have so little output under 50Hz.)

565/largest room dimension in feet = lowest frequency room resonance (565/20 = 28Hz. in a rectangular room that's 20' long, for example)

There's nothing like booming bass notes, especially a repeating kick drum or kettle drum, to obscure the stereo image which is entirely from frequencies above 100Hz. (we can't hear a stereo effect at lower frequencies because our ears are much too close together relative to the 11 foot and longer wavelengths at 100Hz. and lower).
