You like the speakers but they lack the bass you want. Why is it that you won't consider a sub? "Decent" subs are getting cheaper and there are kits to build them for silly cheap.(Parts Express) Cheap as in less than the speaker upgrades you propose. I was dealer for PSB and going up a notch or two or even three won't make that much difference. The speaker upgrade isn't going to give you as deep a bass as the sub nor the flexibility of the sub with all its adjustments. I also agree on room treatments although even a DIY complete room treatment(via Risch) will still cost more than a sub. Reconsider the sub route. Better yet find a dealer that will loan a sub(s) for in home demo. As to the comment the salesperson said about bass v imaging.....no way! I have some speakers that have the best and most bass I have ever had as well as the biggest and best image. My two cents............ET
