It's obvious the fans wanted another Beach Boys "Party" album but what does that have to do with it? While I might agree that Smile can be thought of as kind of "academic", I would disagree with your definition of "musically engaging" - especially as it relates to Pet Sounds. Brian Wilson largely WAS the Beach Boys not an important part of the band. When he tweaked what did they do? He continued to write ( and if I'm not mistaken, produce and arrange ) many of their songs in the 67-70 period before he officially went off to hibernate in the early 70s.Why was Pet Sounds the first BB album not to go gold? Uhh..Why did they televise Elvis above the waist? Why did they supposedly have a near riot at the premier of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring? Why did Elvis Costello do a country album in '81 and a String Quartet album in '93? Pigeonholing Wilson's talent ( or any other ) and measuring it against the Billboard chart ain't exactly a benchmark of creativity or musical talent. Pop fans wanted another "La Bamba" from Los Lobos after that Richie Valens movie in the 80s. They said "that's not who we are" and re-released their Mexican folk music album instead. That gives them a lot of credibility in my mind...the same kind of credibility that had Wilson finishing Smile and making a legitimate comeback.
