Listening to The Doors now, even more than then, I am faced with 2 seperate bands. There are the more mmmm pop-rock shorter sharper songs (some of which are not Morrison's) and then there are the long set pieces... The End, etc, which to my mind were always pretentious, which can be OK, but what passed as theatre in the 60s, really sounds like a 14 year old's drivel now.
Curiously I think Morrison's short songs are much better written, concise and barbed. The band were always on the money and I can't really imagine the songs being interpreted any better.
I kind of like stuff like The Soft Parade for its variety of soundscape, but even there once that "When I was back there in seminary school..." schtick starts I want to put something else on.
