If anything, Morrison's status in the Rock firmament might have been lessened if he'd lived another decade or 2 (we'll never know of course, but he was NEVER a musician).
I agree with you completely about the Doors musical prowess and virtuosity. Why don't they enjoy the same reverence as the Beatles, Stones, Zep, and others? One reason is longevity. Morrison checked out before they really cemented their status in rocks upper firmament.Second, although I'm with the crowd that DOESN'T revere the Doors (compared to those other bands)... the Doors certainly DID GET equal reverence by a HUGE number of bands, musicians, & listeners in the 80's (& even today, to a slightly lesser extent). Much of the 80's Goth & moody Brit pop bands heralded the Doors as their God, certainly a major love & influence. And maybe that's why I disliked 95% of them... everything from New Order, to the Gang of 4, to the Cure, to Marilyn Manson. Whether they "sounded" like them, I don't know, I never found the music interesting enough to listen, but there was a TON of reverence for the Doors & their "ethos", whatever TF that was.
Personally, I never was a huge fan. They were a good 60's era pop band. But so were a LOT of others too. They were more competent than most, but hardly in any "jazz" way, unless you think The Grateful Dead noodling for an hour is great soul-wretching improvisational stuff... LOL.
I'm also no expert on the Doors, even though I was there when every single they had was released. I agree with PdL...my limited background tells me that Morrison WAS a poet... THAT'S how he saw himself artistically. He got into the music thing mostly by accident, and found "hey, this could make me & my work popular"... something that would appeal to just about any artist's ego, certainly a poet, since poetry has not been a cool & culturally "hip" thing, except for maybe ancient Greece & 19'th century Europe. LOL! So no, he wasn't so much interested in the music side of things... which is fine. Hey, it's only R&R!
Jay, I don't know if Morrison "held back" the band musically. I think he was pretty much outside the musical development thing... it's hard to see him wrecking that any more than the coach can hit or pitch in a game for his team... he's at the mercy of the guys on the field. But I haven't read the books or seen the movies, so i don't know the dynamic (so understand I could be totally wrong... LOL.)
