>>> "wouldn't even class them as a supergroup" <<<True, because by definition, or at least by my definition, a supergroup is one which is composed of musicians who were featured performers in other groups that had some degree of success prior to forming the so-called supergroup. None of the members of The Doors had prior success in noteworthy groups before Ray Manzarek and Robbie Krieger started developing songs around Jim's poetry.
>>> "Vastly overrated" <<<
That's a matter of opinion; in this instance mine conflicts with your's and may be a little better informed. Yes, they were hyped and perhaps overhyped at times, but NOT overrated based on the impact they had at the time.
IMHO, their success was due to a series of strong successful albums with hardly any filler and memorable songs that made them comparable to the Beatles and Stones in popularity. Their demographic was a bit older than the age of concert goers for the Beatles, appealing more to college age kids in the late 60's because of Jim Morrison's disparate lyrics, dark brooding demeanor and notorious, unpredictable concerts.
So, no offense intended Mr. Grins, but I'm forced to respectfully disagree with your appraisal of The Door's merits.
