Their music was timeless. I don't know about whether they are not respected, I recently saw a teenager in the record store telling his friend how great they were and which albums to get. I always like to see the younger generation getting into the classic stuff. Compared to the English Supergroups, probably they do come in further down the scale, but that's some pretty stiff competition. Of American rock groups I think they are considered to be among the best ever. By the way there is a new "Doors Live in Philadelphia" cd. I have'nt heard it but have "Live in Detroit" which is great, Kreiger is awesome.
