The Beethovens are good, and well worth having, but there's something really special about that first Borodin set.Just cause I happened to have both CDs close by, I compared their recordings of 10: no question in my mind that the Borodin is the more nuanced (compare statements of the opening theme) and yet also the more explosive (compare the opening of ii) performance. Of course, neither is in very good sound, and I could understand if some listeners felt the Borodin's intensity was just too much to take. (I actually like the Fitzwilliams sometimes when I want better sonics and a more, um, conventionally beautiful approach.) But the Borodins to me is the definitive performance.
