Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

By definition then, the Beethoven Quartet is more authoritative.

The Beethoven Quartet worked for many more years with the composer.

I have the first two Borodin cycles, the second being my favorite. I only have a few Beethoven Quartet rec. on LP. That said I am beginning to feel that maybe the Beethoven Quartet is more apt. Maybe the 2nd Borodin cycle is just too strident.

A real eye opener was hearing String Quartet No. 3 quartet with Julian Sitkovetsky, S Kovetsky, Rudolf Barshai, Yakov Slobodkin. It's a throw away filler on a Oistrakh Brahms/Greig sonata CD. The style is much more human and probing. I might have a listen to the first cycle again, but the Angel transfers are terrible, so I confess audiophile disconnect there.

I still love the Borodins, but I remember a brief flirtation with the Juilliard Quartet in Beethoven - it was faster and more aggressive - but ultimately not as "musical" as I think Beethoven should be. I'm wondering the same thing with the Borodins. I am less and less interested in a supreme interpretation (speaking as a Furtwangler fan, too) than I am in unique expressions, what ever that means.

I have never heard the Beethoven Quartet play Beethoven quartets, but they are supposed to be great as well.
