The Borodins worked with Shostakovich during the composing stages. This is the air the Borodins breathe! Still today my gold standard in these works, with astonishing ensemble work and a very unique "Russian" sound. And best of all, you get... Sviatoslav Richter in the piano quintet! It doesn't get better than that.Their older set reissued by Chandos reissues is even more intense, but the EMI = Melodiya recordings naturally come in much better sound, quite close up and a bit dry, perfect for these works. There's a newer remastered budget set of these same tapes (the EMI issues are OOP), reissued a couple of years ago by Melodiya, which is the one to have if optimal sound is an aim.
