RE: Watco Danish Oil versus Linseed, etc.?

With respect to your friend, I wouldn't use either of those products for the applications you're describing. Old English makes non-permanent products that work really well on previously finished wood like the Mac. Lots of service companies use it to restore the look of the older wood cases. Raw maple veneer? I'd prep it and spray on two coats of clear satin lacquer. Lacquer dries fast and gives the best chance of a water-white finish without dust nibs.
