The clicking noise is almost certainly the reverse mechanism on your deck kicking in as the feed hub will not be rotating.A good adapter works by having wheels inside it that turn the feed spool.
They work by way of a tape recorder head instead of tape moving. when you play a tape conventionaly tape passes over the head producing a magnetic signal which is amplified but to put the signal there in the first place you have to record onto the tape and this is done via the record head which magnetizes the tape by way of sending electricity through a coil of wire inside the head. This produces a magnetic field which magnetizes the tape as it passes over it. In either case an electromagnetic field is produced and as such you can tap off that field in the same way as you can transform ac voltages with a transformer. These car adapters are basically a record head which is fed via your portable player and once installed is very close to the playback head of your car cassette and so the signal is transferred to your car cassette deck and it acts in exactly the same way as if tape were moving over it.
A good adapter should have its head as close to the playback head of your car cassette as possible and the quality should be very good.Regards
Chris.
