My car has a cassete player and a CD player, and the CD player recently broke, and I'm too broke to replace it. So I thought I'd get a cassette adapter, which I have heard of but never used before. So I bought an off-brand one at Fry's and tried it out with a portable CD player. Sound quality was acceptable, but the device itself made a clicking noise that rendered the whole setup unusable. So: does anyone know any brand of these things that for sure does not click when it is being "played"?
I'm also curious about how it works. I have looked around online, and can't find any resources. I seem to recall that cassette tapes work like so: while in play, the capstan/pinch roller move the tape across the head and the spindle-thingies supply enough force to keep the tape taut. What kind of mechanism is in an adapter to fool the player into thinking it's moving against some force? What would happen if the spindles were allowed to spin?
Thanks! Ernie
