It was a cheapo Philips $15 unit from Wal-Mart. And it sounded surprisingly good, and always worked very well.
Mine also never made a clicking sound. Maybe your deck doesn't get along with them for some reason?
There is actually a tape head in the adapter. The circuitry inside the adapter translates the audio input into magnetic pulses that are transferred from the tape head in the adapter to the tape head in your deck. My guess is that if you removed the hubs inside the adapter and allowed the spindles to spin free, it would think the tape was done and shut off.
