I'm left wondering.. couldn't that 'clicking noise' be by any chance the auto-reverse mechanism of your car's deck? Maybe the adapter isn't "fooling" it into thinking there's tape rolling inside and the poor thing's changing direction every other second.Maybe if you took the adapter apart and added a not-too-taut flat rubber band (the ones for office use that are just a bit wider than cassette tape) between the two hubs, it'd make the deck think it's running indefinitely? Just a thought.
Have you tried the adapter on any other deck? Nevermind if it's not a car deck - just a boombox, whatever. If it doesn't make the clicking noise there, maybe you should look into the above. You could also play a regular tape on the car's deck and see if it makes the clicking noise.
Is the clicking mechanical or electronic in nature (ie. do you hear it from the deck or thru the speakers)?
