Hi, Inmate51:Just a few observations and thoughts:
I have often used an original pair of Neumann KM-84 cardioids in location recording and I have to say that my impression was totally the opposite of what you reported. I know for certain that there are sonic differences between the original KM-84 and the later (current) version, the KM-184.
The KM-84 is one of the greatest microphones for recording stringed instruments and in particular, the guitar. They excel on wind instruments, such as the clarinet, as well. As for the omni version, the KM-83, that too is a great microphone and is particularly well-suited for choral work and general orchestral applications.
Perhaps when you used your Neumanns the placement was not the best or the like.
Similarly, the reported "edginess" could be the imprint of whatever mixer or preamp you might have been using, unless you were using a Nagra, whose preamps I am not familiar with.
If you are dissatisfied with your KM-84's, I would love to purchase them from you!
Thanks
