Wow, has this ever been a lively debate!!I'm glad Alan and Bob are friends now. I have fifteen decks, cassette, R2R, DCC. Not including MD, CD recorders and other paraphanalia. I like all mediums - as the recording studio gurus will tell you, if the artist can afford it, the take can be on a Studer A80 running at 30 ips on 5000' of Qauntegy's best, bias set at over 300kHz to deliver from DC to 140kHz (somehwat trashing every known digital format) and we'll through in Dolby SR for a dynamic range of around 130dB. Not to mention unlimited forward compatibility. So we know analogue is good, can be the best etc.
It always was this way and none of these technologies is dead if there ramains a demand, however small. Cassette was indeed intended as a dictaphone medium, but every technolgy evolves so why should we be surprised that this one did too. It was not so much a flawed medium as one with an achilles heel. The head contact patch was miniscule and the speed of the tape slow. Ultimately, after years of development, top end cassette decks, and we all know, I would suppose in this forum, which ones they were, could give all but the top R2R decks a run for their money, and in many cases show them a clean pair of heels. Tapes themselves too, evolved incredibly. The original BASF LHs and non-descript cassettes from Philips gradually gave way to major R+D investments, delivering to the market a new generation of cassettes with sturdy mechanisms and complex formulae.
So, for fans of the humble cassette tape and all those decks they mate with, there's no need to hang your head. For me,good magnetic recording has no peers, whether on the click and swish of my ReVox B99, or a Sony Metal-ES in my rare Alpage AL-50 - is equally satisfying.....and true to the source.
Cheers - Marc
