Blanks cost a ton of money, if and when you can get them, most of the machines out there are over 25 years old, and in need of servicing! On top of that, as high resolution as open reel may be, isn't it limited by the fact that most people will be recording cd's and records anyways? Why not just listen to the record or cd instead, as it's a lot more convenient than threading reels, etc.<Why? Because vinyl records are subject to the negative effects of wear, dirt, and dust, more so that tape. Ask your self the same question about cassette, and you will get the same answer. You also forgot about the existence of pre-recorded reels. Blank R2R tape isn't really that expensive if you know where to look. I have many, many tapes (Scotch/3M, Audio Devices Audiotape, Reeves Soundcraft) from the 50's and 60's that after being bulked, record and play just fine. Sound good, too.
Nothing wrong with cassettes. They have their uses. But they are, IMO, a far cry from high fidelity unless you go to extremely great lenths and expense.
