Home Tape Trail

Reel to reel, cassette and other analogue tape formats.

Re: What Is It With All These Cassette Fanatics??? Open Reel Forum Please!!

If all "inferior" formats and technologies, by popular definition were removed from these forums, we'd lose the opportunity to talk about

tubes
vinyl
horn speakers for home use
open reel tape
analog radio
etc.

I really like the fact that there's a forum where it's possible to talk about cassettes in an intelligent manner... and besides, since when is open reel such a useful format for home reproduction, in 2006?

Blanks cost a ton of money, if and when you can get them, most of the machines out there are over 25 years old, and in need of servicing! On top of that, as high resolution as open reel may be, isn't it limited by the fact that most people will be recording cd's and records anyways? Why not just listen to the record or cd instead, as it's a lot more convenient than threading reels, etc. I don't see the advantage in recording a $15 CD onto a $20 reel that's less convenient to use than the original CD itself!

I'd say the big advantages of hanging on to cassette in 2006 are

-cost of both equipment, blanks, and prerecorded tapes
-portability
-ease of use, specifically with transferring vinyl to a portable medium with minimal effort
-easy availability of blanks
-inoffensive sound, maybe not at the same level as some formats, but they can be made to sound pretty good, and you don't *need* a Nak to enjoy cassettes.
