You can get a nice deck for $500 but you also need tape, tape head cleaner, de-magnetizer, and some cabling. I think a well serviced, $200-$300 deck in excellent shape from a good seller plus $200-$300 worth of tape and accesories is a much better bet than going for the "best" deck you can get for $500. Economically, there is almost no justification for reel to reel but man it sounds nice, looks good, and is an overall pleasure to work with I've found. Even my wife said whe would be sorry to see my reel to reel go - she loves the sound. I have an Akai, but have heard the Teacs and revoxes and any quality unit is hard to fault.good luck.
