For around $500 you could buy yourself a really good reel to reel from ebay just make sure you collect it and then you can check it out before purchasing. You might consider an akai 4000 GX even the 4000ds but make sure the heads are in good condition with the ds as they have been known to wear considerably and akai are nigh immposible to replace! with 7 inch reels or a Teac X7 series where you can still get brand new heads, pinch wheels and capstan belts! These should give you recordings which are of very good quality. Of course you could take a little time and sort out a big reel machine for $500 or less like a Tascam 22 or 34 which would give you incredible results. Bear in mind that the large reel machines are large so think about space. and as apposed to some, some of us like threading the tape and watching the big wheels go round it's part of the experience! If you've got the room flaunt it I say lol.
