Both my brother and my brother-in-law are pursuing the route you suggest Soundnut and their results are impressive. Check out the Qualia Mini-disc player from sony - wow!!! But a high-end mini disc?? In any case, the cheapness of the player and media tends to be offset by the costs of computer/dac/and knowledge base necessary. I can get results that sound as good as theirs with less computer messing about. In this case I'd say its a matter of preference - computer vs luddite - than quality of outcome. Any small differences most likely offset by noisy environment common with portable audio in any case. If you get a chance, listen to a highly compressed mp3 file from an IPOD output. wow, makes you wonder . . .
