Re: Portable audio dilemma (long - sorry!)

If you're happy with your current walkman, you'll be doubly happy with a WM-DC2, although they're only available used, and almost all of them will need their main gear replacing (when it's gone, you can hear the characteristic 'clicking' noise). Unfortunately, Sony UK recently discontinued this gear as a spare part, although it's possible to repair the original if you're prepared to put in the time and effort (have a look at www.stereo2go.com for more info).

The WM-701 and 702 are nice as well, but you'll probably need to fit (or get fitted) a new belt, which is fiddly. The pitch stability and overall sound quality of these last two aren't as good as those of the DC2, or the bulkier D6/D6C for that matter. Always bear in mind that used walkmans are likely to need some sort of servicing, and this is getting harder to do as the years go by and the better cassette walkmans become increasingly rare and obsolete (although the D6/C is better supported than the DC2 in this respect).

If you can find a decent MD portable and home deck, MD can sound really pretty good, especially if you use some of the better discs (which tend to have lower bloc-error rates AFAIR). Trouble is, it involves spending more money, as you already have a cassette deck.

I have no experience personally with iPods and the like, but none of the audiophiles I know who have them rate them especially highly, although they use 8:1 compression rather than lossless, I seem to remember.

Cheers, Jon.
