Maybe IPODs do suck. Dunno. Never had one. That's why I recommended an MP3 Discman instead. It's a different animal.What I do know is that digital transfers of vinyl (or anything else)done on my audio computer system sound virtually identical to the original source. If you keep the bitrate high on an MP3, it's difficult to tell from an uncompressed wav file. There's really not a problem with compression on MP3s if you use a good codec (I use LAME) and keep the bitrate up.
My cassette decks are two TASCAM 122 decks and a Nak 3 head. And they do sound great. But a high bitrate, properly recorded MP3 played through a good soundcard sounds a bit better through my stereo system.
As for portable audio, your mileage may vary, but my MP3/CD Discman beats any cassette Walkman I've owned by a sizeable margin.
