Re: Portable audio dilemma (long - sorry!)

Today there are no good Walkmans anymore. But there have been produced many robust and high quality analogue Walkmans with high quality playback heads and very smooth and natural sound. They are today available used on eBay. There are the "DD" disc-drive models with very strong bass - missing any wow and flutter and the belt drive walkmans where the belt is usually easy to replace.
I was exact in the same dilemma as you. Today I own a few nice and vintage walkmans. The highest quality playback only walkman might be the WM-DC2 with a special laser amorphous head and quartz controled capstan disc drive. It sounds beautyfull and fantastic and does beat any portable digital unit in its natural and dynamic sound! Aiwa and Sony used in around the 90's special heads which do provide a very detailed sound. One of the favorite is also the WM-EX1HG which has warm and significant sound and looks best in its chome body. The WM-701C and 702 are also known to be very handy but to have good playback qualities.
A good TDK MA or Maxell MX taped from high quality vinyl listened on a DC2 or EX1HG is a dream! Check out the Walkman Central, which is a nice WWW site on some Sony models.
