Hi, Brusco:I hope things work out for your application!
I have heard that some of the Ampex electronics were wired slightly differently when it came to the implementation of balanced connectors, or "XLR" sockets. I know that we often consider "pin 2 = hot" the current standard, but you should also try to find out how the connections on your PR-10 were actually wired.
I have read somewhere that my old MX-10 mixer is supposedly one of those components which were wired a bit differently and that "Pin 3" is actually "hot". Though I have not done anything to correct this, since I rarely use it any longer, were I to seriously consider doing so, I would swap the wires around so that Pin 2 would be hot, etc. Anyway, I really prefer using an Aphex 1100 in 2-channel applications these days, since it already has built in some fine converters and comes with switchible phantom power and a good number of cool features which the old MX-10 never had.
Not to knock the MX-10, since many of my older recordings sound great as a result of using that piece of gear. I also replaced all of its original Beyer transformers with Jensens.
Anyway, I should look around to see if I have any decent reels of tape for you!
Watch out for older sealed boxes of certain late seventies/early eighties tape from Scotch (226) and Ampex for "sticksion" or "shedding" problems.
That is the other 'pain in the behind'!
Happy Trails or as they say in recording circles, "Happy TAILS"!
