Re: Ampex PR10---Ohhhhhhh Noooooooo

Hi, Brusco:

My advice is to sell the deck and get something more reliable and possibly BETTER.

You want great tape handling? Get a ReVox A-700. Smooth tape handling was its virtue.

You can replace all of the capacitors in your PR-10 for well under $200 if you do the work yourself. The problem, as I tried to indicate in my last response, is that it is a mess inside that box.

The issue of proper tape is also one of matching tape-to-machine, really. You either get a more recent formula or you get new old stock and have that deck re-biased and re-equalized for what you select.

Either way, the cost of having that done by a technician is not cheap, either.

I suppose you really want to use the PR-10 for recording purposes, rather than for playback? That can be expensive.

On the other hand, if you just want to play existing 2-track tapes or some old 2-track pre-recorded tapes, that is another story. Still, properly adjusted playback eq is a good idea!

Have you tried the mechanical tape lifters yet? That is sort of the "Hummer way" of doing things, but interesting, as well!

How about a good used Nagra IV-S?

Rich

There is a large printed circuit board with some rather unreliable connections.

I am also surprised to hear that Deve Dintenfass likes them or at least is using them for some of his work. Oh, well, it **IS** a nice looking deck, isn't it?
