Misinterpreting volume differences as quality differences

Your experience has been that listeners, including your self, usually misinterpret small differences in volume between Component A and Component B as differences in quality, prefering the component having the greater volume. I am not sure I would have the same preference, but I hope I would hear some difference.

Given a listener's knowledge that he prefers volumes higher(or lower), why wouldn't he recognize the possibility that a perceived quality difference may be nothing more than a volume difference? If he thinks he likes A better than B, he can turn A's volume down(or up)to see if his mind changes.
