The cost of the processor and extra amps/speakers is very large.But many audiophiles already spend a lot of money on compulsive upgrades that rarely make large differences, assuming any difference is audible. Spending money on surround sound and a premium processor will provide a huge difference 100% of the time. Audiophiles such as Linkwitz and Floyd Toole write that they love two-channel music processed to surround sound.
The results of processing two-channel into surround sound are better sound quality -- a significant step toward creating an image of live musicians in the room. At a minimum, adding a mono center speaker that matches the existing left-right speakers is very helpful ... while adding identical side speakers may be too much money for the added performance.
