I understand your view, and would agree analyzing and describing what you are hearing requires time and thought.What the BBC article puts forward is if you give your brain too much time it will mask differences for you in an attempt to categorize what it is hearing. So, small difference may go un-noticed.
Hard to prove, although their study seems to show they are right at least in some cases.
For me, switching after at least 10-15 seconds or more is required to get a conscious evaluation of what I am hearing. But if you believe the study, your first instinct might be better than your evaluation.
