Re: probably hopeless

Saw an interesting paper the other day by Professors Taber and Lodge (Stony Brook Univ, NY) titled "Motivated Skepticism in the Evaluation of Political Beliefs."

While the paper examines political beliefs and biases, it is applicable to many areas of life including the objectivist/subjectivist and blind testing issues discussed ad nauseam in this forum.

The cut-to-the-chase version is simple. If the results of a study or test confirm a person's belief, they will readily accept it as valid due to a strong "confirmation bias." Alternatively, if the results of the study or test challenges the existing beliefs of a person, they will become a "motivated skeptic." Every aspect of the situation will be examined with a microscope with the hope and intent of finding a flaw that will allow results to be challenged and disregarded.

In short, your well intentioned proposal will ultimately fail to change many (if any) minds. It doesn't really matter what the results are of any test done your way. The side that has their beliefs confirmed will accept it in toto and the other side will become motivated skeptics and pick it apart until they can safely declare it invalid.

Nice try, though.
