Yet the subjective reviewer seemed to like them well enough.Actually it rather seems to me that something quite near the opposite of what you predict, i.e. that the speaker's illusion of good performances would " ... fall apart catastrophically with different kinds of music", actually took place. In fact it seems that you, being familiar with the potential consequences implied by the cabinet resonances measurements, went about demonstrating just those consequences in rather peculiar ways, e.g. "... if I paused the CD player, the honk could be heard as a reverberant die-away". How many folks during their normal listening will find themselves pausing the CD player ion such a manner do you suppose?
Finally I think you took more than a little liberty when you concluded "While Paul Bolin apparently managed to work around this speaker's limitations to some extent, its disappointing measured performance precludes any recommendation ...". As to precluding a recommendation I believe that is entirely your call but the comments about Bolin's experience seems more than a little disingenuous given the positive comments he bestowed on the product; a glange at his concluding section will bear that out.
...
I personally believe you place more stock on your measurements that is warranted. I base this comment not only on the question of the correlation between sonics and performance generally, i.e. a highly imperfect correlation to say the very least, but also on witnessing many times cases where the subjective reviewer was very much impressed but where you expressed displeasure with the measurements.
