Re: Besides speakers like Tom's

I am afraid the looks and 28in by 28in horn mouth enclosure would pretty much rule it out for home use...

I don't see why. Sure, it would probably be in the negative numbers with regard to Wife Acceptance Factor, but much of high end audio hasn't a lot of WAF to begin with. The mantra has largely been "its the sound that counts!"

...and the headroom is absurd for a home product (unless you never want to leave the linear and very low distortion region, even when loud).

Trust me. In high end audio, nothing is too absurd.

Also, while the metal grill is critical in its market, the measurements are better with the grill removed.

Most audiophiles listen with the grilles off anyway.

A plus for the physical size though is the directivity usually produces reasonable measurements even at the listening position (in my room they are 14 feet away), unlike domes and cones in the same locations.

Exactly. As I said to John below, this aspect alone is a big plus for the home audio environment where there is typically little or no room treatment.

On the other hand, while unavoidably biased, I don’t think fidelity is an issue, we have had some acceptance in the recording area, for example the fellow who mixed / recorded the Montreux jazz festival this year has give a number of mixing seminars, using this kind of speaker for playback.

Yes. Beyond the accommodations for sound reinformcement such as the trapezoidal shape for arraying and the industrial paint job, neither of which would preclude their use in a home audio environment, as far as I can see, the SH-50 was ultimately designed to be a high quality, high performance loudspeaker.

I am curious what the “hifi” community would think about the sound and stereo imaging, while those aspects are perhaps not as important where they are normally used, the design principal corrects many audible issues that stand uncorrected in nearly all conventional speakers.

Yes. Which is why I can't think of any reason whatsoever why the SH-50s would be unsuitable for home audio use, and indeed even more suitable than most which are intended solely for home audio use.

I will be off line for a few days but I would like to figure out how to have some hifi people hear them.

I'll see what I can do if I can't convince John to reconsider his position.

In the meantime, have a great weekend!
