Rupert Neve designs are far from minimalist. Open up some of his gear, and see how many components are in there! I have some mic amp with 3 band EQ's, and they are absolutely crammed full. Also in answer to the post above you from Steve, I am sure that Cranesong make a compressor that is supposed to mimic other classic units. I have heard that its supposed to be good, but can't believe that it can be a discreet unit to achieve that.I do believe that there are benefits to class A circuits, although I have heard many non class A pieces of kit that sound great. A lot of the sound I think that people attribute to valves, is probably more attributable to class A. Good class A power amps can make the midrange and treble on speaker systems become more transparent, so its not all myth. But I still don't believe any studio advertising an all discreet signal path is telling the truth. There are chips in almost everything these days, even the mics. They would also have to have a very old tape machine to be discreet there too. If people are not careful it is very easy to become anal about the gear. The point of recording is getting a performance onto tape, playing around with the latest greatest piece of retro vintage gear can get in the way of that. Possibly thats why so much of the music on the so called esoteric labels, really seems to lack any performance values.
