I would like to add a couple of comments to this arguement. And I'm on no particular side on this one, but the living presence recordings, good as they were when they were done, would have certainly been compressed when they were cut for the record. Its not possible to make a decent cut without compressors and EQ. Thats the technical limitation of the cut. The CD would almost certainly have been a direct transfer from the original mixed masters. Being recorded on mag film recorders, noise floor would have been acceptable, though not briliant. I have heard some of the living presence recordings, both on CD and Record. The CD shows up the inherant limitations of the original recordings, there is an amount of "tape hiss" and the recordings are a little on the bright side, that might have been to do with the bias setting on the mag recorder, although I have to say that they were remarkable for the technology of the time. If my memory serves me correctly they were recorded using 3 valve U47's. These mics are still used today in studio's, although they are rare. Passive mixers can work well, as can passive eq's like the pultec, but there are advantages in many of the modern pieces of technology. Some of the stuff that is coming as a result of digital technology, is going to have huge benefits for even the man in the street. Lets face it even a £400 midi system way outperforms the old fashioned radiograms of the 60's and 70's. They were around £40 when a weekly wage was about £20, so the modern equivalent is cheaper too!

I agree that people like Rupert Neve are brilliant audio designers, I have used much of his equipement, and still do, but I know that Rupert isn't adverse to using op-amps in his gear, so I think the op amp argument isn't totally valid.

Roland
