Although the world is filled with highly skilled professionals who can help a HiFi DYI-er when he gets lost in unchartered territory, there's a lot less help available for a pro audio DIY-er. And it gets even worse if the pro audio project is based on old 600 ohm, transformer balanced technology. The good pro audio techs spend 95% of their time working on transistor or chip based equipment. When tube gear is used in pro audio these days, its usually something like the gear from Manley Labs, tube gear utilizing modern technology. But as a beginner to the world of DIY, I'm interested in building designs that I can truly understand from input to output. And that means mostly passive, transformer coupled, 600 ohm gear. My current goal is a 4x2 line level summing box, preferably fully passive. The pro techs always suggest some chip based summing ciruit, that probably works really well, but what goes on inside that little box may as well be magic. A passive summing circuit is perfect for a 4x2 situation but where can I turn for assistance? The local tube guitar amp gurus have a solid understanding of passive components, but they all go blank at my request for balanced I/O and lots of clean headroom. I just want to find a tech that I can pay for an hour or two or three of consulting time. Somebody that I can ask a bunch of questions and pass sketches back and forth for an hour or two. But finding a pro audio tech who really understands 50 year old design techniques has been a big problem. Suggestions?
Thanks.
