Most of the Atma-Sphere amps use a variety of transformers. Of these, the filament and output tube B+ transformers are usually electrostatically shielded torroids. The Driver B+ supply is an EI core, again shielded. While it is true that torroids have sharper saturation characteristics (which can be dealt with by making them larger), they also have superior electrostatic shielding capability, which is important for getting rid of noise on the AC line (and far more so than other characteristics of EI transformers). IOW, you just have to be careful in the specs of the transformer.
